The center of Amsterdam: life in Amsterdam
Where the four big canals are (Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht), that’s where the center of Amsterdam is. When you want to be living, as expat, in the center of Amsterdam you’ll probably end up in a traditional canal house. Which is, most of the time, very charming. But besides charming, it’s most of the time also quite old. If you’re afraid of mice, living in the center of Amsterdam won’t be the best choice. And if you have kids, it can be difficult to find an apartment which suits you, as most of the apartments have steep stairs. But if you’re a partypooper, living in the centre of Amsterdam can be a real party as there are lots of bars and restaurants. In the center you’re on walking distance of the night life of Amsterdam. As an expat living in Amsterdam Centre and find a place to park your car is almost impossible. If you want a parking permit, the city council will put you on a waiting list where you can be on for over 10 years before receiving the permit. Apartments with private parking are very rare and quite expensive.
