The rental price is not just a rental price…

Rent indexation

When renting in an apartment in Amsterdam the rent will increase every year with a tiny percentage. Most of the time this percentage is around the 1.5% and 2.0%. This percentage depends on the cost of living and is a standard measurement in The Netherlands.

Rent exclusive, or inclusive

If you rent your apartment exclusive, this means that above the rental price you have to pay the local taxes (garbage tax, environment tax, sewer tax) and other services such as central heating, water, electricity, telephone and internet. If you rent an apartment of 1.500 euros per month with 1 or 2 bedrooms, the extra costs are mostly about the 200 euros per month.

Minor repairs in the apartment

If the apartment needs minor repairments, the tenant has to pay for the repairments. Make sure when renting the apartment you come to terms with the landlord about some minor repairments which can be done before the check in: this will often save you money. So keep an eye open when your housing agent makes the checklist.

When you want to change things in the apartment

This will be at your own cost; but keep in mind that the owner would like to see his “old, original” apartment back at the check out. So everything you will change, you have to change it back before the check out.
